Fuel Filter

OK, So two times now I have taken my car to my indie to change my fuel filter. Id do it myself, but I don't have a jack since I am at college.
The first time it was on my 850, the second it was my s70. After both visits, the CEL has come on. Is this normal for changing a fuel filter, or should I be yelling at him?

ps. gas smell on start up this morning has never been there before today.
