Over the weekend I pulled front wheels to look at replacing rotors/pads and noticed that, on the left side, the inboard face of the rotor was worn more that the outboard side. This is on visual inspection alone, which means that it's probably pretty substantial.
The symptoms indicating rotors/pads were slight pedal pulse, but mostly a feeling of "surging" at light pedal application (i.e., a variable amount of grip). Note that a replace of rear pads/rotors with OE stuff took a lot of these symptoms away. But, at 110kmi, and about 60kmi on those rotors, I figured they were due.
The last time I observed this different wear phenomena (on a different brand of car, but with same brand and style/design of caliper), it indicated that the caliper piston was starting to pit and not fully retract. It can also indicate that the slide pins are dry and not allowing full retraction, but I would expect to see evidence of that on the outboard face of the rotor. I fixed the problem by getting a rebuilt caliper from a local jobber shop. Unfortunately, they don't stock a rebuilt for the 850, and list price for this piece at the dealer (reman'd) is $130--more than the cost of two rotors.
Has anybody experienced this problem in the past and just R&R'd the caliper itself? Did you get a kit? Where? In some ways, it's substantially easier for me to pay the money to the dealer to pick up the reman'd part, but if I can pull the caliper and clean it up and get the same effect, I'd prefer to save the cash for other things.
