I have a very foul odor (like dirty socks/dog ____) coming from the A/C vents even when set to off.

I pretty much know I need an evaporator, but is there a way to get rid of the odor before I bite the bullet. I've kept recharging. I've used sealers but the the time between has gotten too short. Is the smell from the pollen filter? If so, will replacing that take care of the odor?
