Our 97 also idles at about 1000 rpm. Actually it is just below the 1000rpm mark on the tach. I believe that is normal. We have had the car in for a bad idle switch and it came back from the dealer with a new switch and exactly the same idle speed. Also I am not sure how accurate the tach is at idle.

Anyway I have assumed it is not a problem.
