P0172 System too Rich V70-XC70 1998

P0172 System too Rich

(Previous Owner Too Rich to Care)

Bought my '98 V70 GLT in July. (Sold my '91 940 SE turbo wagon)

Original gas cap. (Topless cap is on order from ipd.)

New York State Inspection passed emissions test: HC=0.03 CO=1.3 NOx=0.26

Check Engine light comes and goes. Always has.

Got OBD-2 ISO interface and software from Alex Peper.

Mode $03 P0172 System too Rich [Bank 1]

1) Is code 172 related to the gas cap?

a) If so, is it really too rich or does it just think it's too rich?

i) If really too rich could this damage/wear other parts (like cat)?

b) If not then what is the cause? I didn't see this code at Bay 13.

2) How do I clear the code - is it Status-Mode $04-Clear Emission Related Information?

3) How do I clear the Service light? (Peper claims I can on my car)

4) Mode $09 Vehicle Information doesn't seem to work, is this normal for Peper's ISO reader? Pins 4,5,7,15,16 are present in the reader plug.

5) Is there an enhanced data set available for Volvo-specific codes?

Thank You! And a free Thanksgiving turkey if you can answer ALL questions correctly ;)

- Tom
