I did the same thing with the rear seat. I covered both ends with electrical tape, but not the part of the latch that points front to back. It worked for several years and the tape is cheap.

For the rear hatch, it can be adjusted with the 2 T40 blots holding down the striker. But be very careful! If you make it too tight, you will brake the lock. Just move the plate forward about 1/8", the dirt around the plate should help you judge the distance. There are also "rubber" bumbers at each bottom corner, for lack of another word, that get old and hard as a rock. Consider replacing these.
