15000 mile service V70-XC70 2001

My 2001 XC is due for a 15,000 service. Is this service necessary or is it a way for dealership to increase their profits? I was wondering if this is even a manufacturer recommended service or something generated by the dealership. As an aside, My volvo has been problem free and a pleasure to drive.
