Ed, if you go here http://www.obd-2.com you can get a piece of software and a cable to mate your PC (or a laptop) to the OBDII port of your Volvos. This tool's main function is to read and clear the diagnostic trouble codes, which turn on the check engine light. I have also heard that the author of this software has figured out how to extinguish the service reminder light on 850 series and x70 series Volvos that require a tool. The whole packacge costs $120, but requires a Windoze PC.
