white smoke and running rough 850 1995

I am looking at buying a 95 850. The owner said that the vehicle broke down a few weeks ago and is now running rough and blowing white smoke.

Any ideas what this could be? Slipped timing belt? Head gasket? Something simple?

The vehicle has 125K miles and looks great inside and out. Owner says that it has been maintained well. They want $1000 US for it. I don't mind spending some money on it but I don't want to spend thousands.

Anyone have any ideas on what to look at when I inspect the vehicle?
