front end howl V70-XC70 1999

1999 V70 XC 105,000 well maintained miles. There was a distinct wherrr that has grown into a loud constant howl. It seems to be coming from the front end, doesn’t change during left or right turns. I lifted the front end off the ground and hand spun both tires. I heard a slight ticking and tracked it to what seemed to be a center housing for something…could it be the notorious bevel gear that I hear so much about? Is that ticking/clicking sound normal? Have always used the same size tires so I am hoping it is not the bevel gear. Wheel bearing?...or is that wishful thinking? Will these wheel bearings collapse, I have a forty mile drive to the nearest Volvo dealer, who I would like to stay away from if possible. Thanks for any feedback.
