Different sounding fan/pump after initial start-up S70 1998

Klaus (and anyone else),
I've been hearing something different after I start the vehicle up (mostly when it's the first start of the day). It sounds like a pump.....I don't think it's the cooling fan though. It has a higher pitch/metallic sound to it. It seems to be located on the driver's side under the bonnet. Last week I had the infamous ABS light come on in stop & go traffic, but it extinguished itself a few hours later and hasn't come on since...even with heavy braking to ensure everything works. Could this be the ABS pump (if there is one) that I'm hearing?

Thanks,
Vinnie
