Dave,

Yes, the new new cylinder can be keyed the same as your old one. I had this problem last winter, and it was fixed under warranty (I got an extra key out of the deal, I guess it came with the cylinder). In my case, my wife could not start the car, but I could if I turned it very hard. I would guess that It's not a DIY job. For me, the day would end with a floor mat full of tiny parts, and the air full of my curses.
