Resetting CEL on '96 850T5 850

Greetings.

Can one of those cheap, $60 OBD2 code readers from Harbor freight reset my check engine light? OBD2 is smart enough that a simple battery un-hook won't do it right?

I'm almost certain that the code is for the rear o2 sensor. The car threw this code several times, then I got the sensor replaced and all was well for a number of weeks. Well, apparently there's a service bulletin about a wire extension recommended by Volvo to keep the connector out of oil leaks or something. Once I installed this wire extension, the CEL came on the next day.

So I know these things are not the greatest at pulling Volvo codes, but I think I can solve my problem by removing the wire extension and resetting the CEL.

Thanks.
