good bye Volvo 850

I just want to share a bitter experience with 96 850 GLT.
I'm not blaming Volvo for this. Its just that local mechanics are not ready for Volvo's electronics or may be I'm getting a bad copy.
My 850 engnine overheated even when the temperature showed normal (half way up). I was on the way out of town for a holiday and suddenly I smelled something burning so I pulled over. The engine died right after I stopped.
White smoke all over the engine bay.. could not do anything but waited for a tow.
THe next day the mechanic told me that it needs a total engine overhaul. He showed me chipped piston...?? How could thiss happen?? He told me that overheating might be the blame and the overheating was caused by insufficient coolant water. Mine don't have coolant level sensor.
I own an Escudo which has no/less sensors than a Volvo, but the car won't start/dies when there is insufficient or no coolant water and so my previous Honda. So why Volvo engine kept running when the heat exceeded its maximum allowed temperature.
So Good bye Volvo.. Its a great ride but too much trouble.
