v70 alternator V70-XC70

Brought my 04 2.4L FWD into a garage for a parking brake problem and they did a courtesy check - which I was later charged for - of the alternator. Was told it was producing out of range fluctuations on the diode, or something, and I needed an alt. They would do it for $500+ and said the Volvo part itself was $500 from the dealer. They would use the next best thing....

Can I just check this w/ a multimeter? How hard is changing the alternator on a v70 if necessary?

Thanks. Also, is the regulator a separate part of built into the alternator?
