Everone is entitled to an opinion, and here's mine: I have owned a 1993 GLT for the past four years and find it to be an excellent car except for the evaporator, trans problems, shift microshift, and harsh ride and rattles because of all of the cheap plastic on the interior, which, as most of you know, affect later years also. All other things considered, I think they are decent cars. My car has just turned 151,000 miles, and does not consume any oil. As I always stress, you should be vigilant about fluid changes (engine oil, antifreeze every two years, brake fluid every two years, trans fluid every 20,000 miles, and routine maintenance. Don't forget the flame trap and air filter replacement. If you don't, someday you will pay the piper. The 854 has a bullet-proof engine when maintained properly, and is one of the smoothest and quietest running engines on the market; yet it has a nice buzz to the exhaust when driven aggressively. I must say though, that my 1998 Audi A4 Quattro is more fun to drive but a pain in the ass to work on. If you guys think Volvo is expensive to maintain, don't buy an Audi. Don't get me wrong, the Audi is a very nice car - no squeaks or rattles, and sticks to the road like a tick on a dog's ass.
Trust me. Why, you ask? Because I am old (47) and experienced. I also do all of my maintence/repairs, including my AC evaporator replacement on the Volvo (what a pain in the ass). When you tranny goes, and it probably will, be sure you replace the rear main seal and PNP switch at the same time.
