Suplemental Restrain System. Your airbags won't work while this little gem is lit up (pretty sure anyway) Could be anything.....17 years of banging around on the roads could have loosened up a connector, a plug could have fallen out (like the one on the passenger airbag that is upside down) or a contact could have corroded or the little computer module quit on you.

Take it to an authorized person to check out.
