Has my blower motor failed? S70 98

This morning, when I first started the car, the blower fan

ran for about 2 seconds and then stopped (1998 S70 T5M, 40K

miles). It sounded odd (a groaning type of noise) but I

did not hear anything that sounded like something was stuck

in the fan. The vent control LEDs then came on and flashed

(very festive for this time of year).

If I turn off the ignition and try again I get the same thing.

Drove to work (35 miles) thinking it might be better once

warmed up but same thing occured after the car well warmed up.

Any idea about what I am looking at? I have heard horror

stories about replacing fans on the FWD models. Hoping

service is easier on the 70 series.

Thank goodness for heated seats, space in the garage and

mild California winters.

Thanks in advance.
