Try not to be so negative. The 5 cylinder engine blocks are known to be extremely reliable and last longer than most other engines, including the old Volvo cast iron red blocks.

Her problem is with the head, if there is a real problem. Most good junk yards like Erie Volvo will sell her an engine for $750 and garantee it for a year, Craigslist is NOT a place to buy engines or electronic parts, unless you know the seller.

We also do not know where she lives and pricing for labor is regionalized, usually cheaper below the Mason Dixon line and Southern California. If she lives in NYC, then she will have higher costs.
