XC70 idle/stalling issues, advice welcome. V70-XC70 2001

Hello! My 2001 XC70 (260K) is playing up as follows.

1. Stalling at intersections, when putting foot down from idle.
2. While cruising, when power drops near idle there is a 'thunk' and delay in power when accelerator is pressed.
3. There has always been a delay when pressing accelerator from idle RPM, just a momentary one but it's annoying. This is now a roll of the dice as to whether the car goes or stalls now.
4. Idle is reasonably stable at 700, but stumbles and recovers every 10-15 secs.

The car has always had number 3, but has gradually worsened since a fuel pump and turbo replacement 6 months ago. Hard to know whether it was caused by those replacements or just another problem coming home to roost.

I was going down the path of an ETM replacement, but tried disconnecting the MAF sensor. The car drove beautifully without the MAF sensor connected, no hesitation, stalling etc, but the car sensed it missing and went into limp home mode. I replaced the MAF sensor thinking it had it skunned, but sadly there is only a slight improvement with the new item. Today I tried disconnecting the MAP sensor, and once again the car drives better, more responsive to throttle, but uneven in power and idle as would be expected.

It seems that when the computer is deprived of sensors it runs better... sort of.. much more responsive with no hesitation at least. That being the case, I don't think I have the classic ETM wiper arm issue? Otherwise the hesitation in acceleration and poor idle would remain with the sensors disconnected??

I find this problem hard to work, as although I'm mechanically savvy, I can't get a workshop manual to use for this car and I'm flying blind.

If anyone can poke holes in my logic or share their own joy of repairing the 2001 XC70, please help.

My thoughts are to keep replacing bits? try for a software reload? Go all out for an ETM? Drive it into a tree for insurance?

Cheers, and happy new year to all.
