Rear axle clunk/thud S70 1999

This past week my '99 AWD S70 made a really loud clunk/thud while I was driving in town. At first, I thought I had just run over something, since it sounded and felt like hitting a basketball-size boulder right in the rear gear box. A few days later, though, I noticed it clunking with increasing frequency, usually after accelerating from a stop. Also makes the clunk when I shift from D to R or into P. Since the clunking started I haven't driven any faster than 30mph, so I don't know if it happens when shifting into higher gears.

My dad suggested that I check out the U-joints. I've also seen other posts for AWD V70's about a software upgrade. Not sure if any of these sound like good solutions, but hoping that someone might have some insight.

Also, does it sound like something that needs to be fixed immediately? I'm at school and hoping that I can wait till it gets a bit warmer to drive home and fix it.

Thanks.
