What actually is the "special tool' for resetting the service light? 850 1997

1997 huh? Not sure if that was OBD I or II.

If it is OBDII then you would need a scan tool. They can be had for cheap. I have a cable that connects to my laptop and run VOL-FCR software.

For OBDI cars there`s a diagnostic breakout in the engine bay. At the front of the engine bay on the passenger side, beside the radiator, you should see 2 boxes labled A and B. Lift off the cover for side A and you should see a fly wire that can be placed inside the series of holes under the cover. With the engine off connect the hole into hole no. 7. Go into the car and turn the key to position 2 (position right before you start the engine)Go back to the engine bay, where you were and press the button beside the LED 1 time and it should read any codes that are held in the system. Codes are 3 digits. So it should flash a sequence of flashes 3 times with a pause between each. Remember the first sequence you see. It helps to write it down. Press the button once again for the next code. When the first sequence is repeated you can reset. Press and hold the button for over 5 seconds. Upon release the light should turn off then on again. While the light is on, press and hold again for another 5+ seconds. Press the button one more time and watch the sequence. It should be 1 1 1, the code for no codes. Take your key out of the ignition, remove the fly wire from the hole and place the cover back on.

That will reset the service light, if done properly. This is only for OBDI engines though, which may not even apply to you. Good luck
