Fuel pump? 850 1996

My son's 96 854 has a tendency to sputter and occasionally die. After a couple times, he determined this only happened when the fuel was around the 6 mark or below. Maybe happened 3 times in the past six months--over 8k miles, so not a big deal. However, now it seems to be doing it more frequently, and even if the fuel is up near 12 or more. He is fairly certain that it only happens when the car is stopped, and at a downward incline (nose lower than tail). We suspect the fuel pump is the culprit, as a similar thing happened to my other son's 854, but I always like to check on here before spending a couple of hundred dollars or a couple hours on any of our bricks....
