strange heating problem V70-XC70 1999

Hey guys,
my 99 V70 was feeling down the past few days I guess.
The engine temperature wouldn't reach normal. The needle would slowly go up after about 2 miles then it would stay below normal. Then eventually go to normal after about 15 minutes of driving. Then go down. I was thinking thermostat? My heat was cool, and my a/c compressor was not coming on. Then yesterday, the temperature reached normal after about a mile like it used to, the heat was hot and the a/c worked again. what?! (the ECC lights did blink in the morning a few days ago, related?)
any ideas about what happened?
