Plastic trim showing wear 850 1997

How do you clean the plastic trim around the body and the bumpers to bring them back to new-car status? Mine is showing the effects of either sun/wax or whatever. Volvo says never to use anything but soap, or mineral spirits at the extreme. The anthracite gray is starting to show white where the wax/polymers hit it, but when I try to use all the "gentle" removers, it keeps showing up white after it dries. I'm about ready to reach for my spray bottle of Castrol's hell-for-stout butyl cleaner which will eat the skin off your hands, but I don't want to damage the surface of the plastic trim. What do I use, and when I wax, is there something that will take the wax off the trim so that when it dries it won't turn white? I know when you wax your car you tend to get careless and the rag or polisher touches the bumper or plastic side trim and you get wax on it, which shows up when it dries. Having to mask the trim everytime you wax seems like such a pain. Is there any kind of sealer you can put on this plastic trim to keep the wax from turning it white, or should you just be careful, wash with mineral spirits after waxing as Volvo suggests, and leave it alone? On my 240 I actually sprayed on some recommended gray paint that looked fine for a couple of months and then it was back to the flaky scabby look. Ditto now on my 850, though I haven't tried any of the anthracite gray paints that NAPA or some of the other parts stores recommend. What to do?
