06 S60 Clunk on acceleration S60

I went to look at an 06 S60 with 68k miles (AT, T version) today and all seemed well except for a quick "clunk" when accelerating from a dead stop. The sound felt as if it were coming from under the center console. It didn't feel like it was shift or transmission related as the power was smooth all the way to speed. I was also able to get it to happen when going in reverse, although not so bad. Also the car didn't seem to do it if I slowed down, but not to a stop, then hit the gas. The owner did admit that the car need tie rod ends, but I wouldn't think those would cause this type of noise. I have an 96 850 and I'm not that familiar with the S60 (yet).

Any ideas what this could be and the complexity of the repair?
