1997 850 valve noise (clicking)... what is this? 850 97

I am considering purchasing a 1997 Volvo 850 GLT. The car seems fine, has 70000km on it. The only thing that seemed out of the ordinary was a clicking sound that lasted for about 20 seconds before stopping. The salesman said that the noise was the valves (it sounded like two metal coins being struck together). He claimed that they are "self adjusting" and this is why the noise went away. Should I be concerned about this sound? Are there any other particulars about the engine I should look for?

Thank You in advance.
