sensor failure in rear gate latch? V70-XC70 2005

Anyone else out there had failure of sensor in tailgate latch at 48 months or fewer? What an annoyance. Since the sensor is not sending the 'locked' signal, the top rear inside lamp stays lit! ( unplug the thing and throw it with diffuser into a box in the back to save the battery!) Also, believing it's got a door unlocked, the lamps fail to flash when I lock the car. I tried the latch when locked and it REALLY is locked!

Does this mean a new latch assembly? Costly? Warranty eligible?
