Torque is reversed when shifting to R. You should be able to 'feel' the tranny mesh the reverse gear and then go 'clunk' as the torque converter does its thing. Try it from N with just enough brake pedal pushed to allow you to shift and not have the calipers touching.

I hope your car is always stationary when shifting to/from R. The AW tranny gets stressed when the car is moving even slightly.
