Fan Blower... Climate Control Unit S70 1998

This is actually a c70, but the innards are the same.

My blower fan has been inop since i got the car home. On my ride home with it, the AC kept flipping on automatically (despite the temps in the 20s), and the buttons for the inside/outside air were unresponsive. Since removing the shorted master window switch from the car, most of the electrical gremlins have left the car.

The blower has remained non-functions.

However... after driving around for a while today, I managed to flip the switches "just right" and the low setting with cold and auto made the fan come back to life.

This strikes me as something other than a failing fan. This behavior combined with the previous button weirdness makes me think that the problem is actually the climate control unit itself.

These can be had affordably - it it worth the risk to replace the whole unit for under $50.00???

Does the behavior I've described sound like a flaky unit?
