A strut bearing is near the top of the sprung strut, not visible, and has nothing to do with steering. The strut bushing is also not visible.

The steering column can be seen, barely. Most of it's travel is covered by intake air hoses and air cleaner box. You are looking for the U-joint just in front of the firewall, and down about a foot or so.
