Your car is 15 years old, why buy new when rebuilt will work nicely? Save some money.

Replacing the rack is labor intensive along with an alignment, and yes, they can also be rebuilt. But you need to have a serious talk with your mechanic. Did the metal shavings come from the rack and cause the PS pump to fail, or did they come from the PS pump and cause the rack to fail?

You need to determine how bad the rack was damaged, if at all.
