Ambient temperature guage fluctuation 1993

I put in a aftermarket VDO ambient temp gauge in my 245. I followed their installation instructions exactly. The needle jumps left or right about 10-15 degrees?

The only thing I did a little different was to place the hot lead on the interior fuse which was for switched lights, this was easier than a splice somewhere. Changes in terrain just makes it bounce wilder. The sensor is in an ideal location away from any heat source; mounted on the outside of frontal perpendicular frame.

Any idea what could cause this? Is there a way to test the gauge?
