Well I got the second worst news on my 850 (next to the rear main seal) in the 160,000 miles since owning. I was told my intake manifold and the PVC would need to be cleaned/replaced due to buildup inside the manifold. The PVC I have had done before but I never ran across the intake buildup. My kids drive the car these days and the car was making a ticking sound that increased with higher revs and slowed with lower. I thought maybe a belt as I could tell where the sound was coming from.
I was told the buildup in the intake manifold was building pressure on the engine and that was what was making the ticking sound. In the past the dealer sprayed cleaner inside the intake to remove the buildup but they don't do that anymore. They are recommending taking the intake manifold off and cleaning as well as the PVC. Total estimated cost $800 for parts and 4-5 hours labor. The dealer said it is partly due to the lower quality of gas and ethanol additives that most gas uses these days.
Not sure if anyone has had the same issues. I'm getting the work done because the rest of the car is solid and the shop has always been fair with me on other work. I thought I'd pass this along in case you hear the same ticking noise and need a point of reference for the dealer cost of the repair. If you think there is a better way to get this fixed, let me know as well. Thanks.
