alternator output for a 94' 850 850 1994

Hi guys
I looked through all the threads I could find and could not find what I am looking for
my last Volvo was an 91'
I don't know anything about 850's
want to help my neighbor
so I put my voltmeter on his battery while motor was idling
output was like over 17 and touching 18
can anyone tell me what is the proper output for the alt on this car
it seems way high to me, I would have expected 14, maybe 15
I am thinking maybe this is what caused his battery to fail
