coolant looks like water-Heated air smells like curry

My newly purchased 1998 V70t5 has a 'curry' smell when using the heating. Ive changed the cabin filter (which was filthy)with no change, i changed the coolant which looked very much like water. The previous owner showed receipt of radiator work that was done in 09. wheres the smell coming from?..Also the owners manual says turbo cars cooling system is 7.2 litres but i can only put 5 litres in it. (with heater to max hot) ..Has damage been done causing something to smell??
