Well my SIPS works 850 1997

The original SIPS, pre side airbag, was nothing but a solid metal rod in the front of the seat bottom and extending out about 1 inch on each side. That would limit crush from the side to about 2 inches.

The side airbag started in 1995 with turbo models, to protect the side of the torso. New cars also have side curtain air bags which deploy to keep the head from hitting the side window, and glass from cutting the face.
