White foam in PVC 850

I have a 1997 850 NA with 140K. It uses about a cup of coolant every 200 miles. It runs perfectly, no white exhaust. I replaced the PVC system a few days ago. The tubes were stuffed with white foam, the PVC canister had a half cup of water in it, and the vacum line that runs with the PVC tube from the canister to the throttle body was melted aganist the engine block. I have only owned the car for the last 10K so I don't know if it was over heated in it's previous life. Is there anyway to know if this is a head gasket vs a cracked head/block. Also the engine oil is in perfect condition but I do get some white foam on the dipstick. Thanks
