This is very nice solution. Just one more question - the shape of the "hook" at the "hidden" side of the strut is such that you need to press it from the top to snap in place. Closing trunk lid would move it laterally. Please elaborate a bit.

Maybe your struts have a different "hook"? I have not seen the IPD struts closely. But you can tell if they are any different from the ones you removed.
