Tim, the behaviour is normal. Volvo radio does not retract the antena unless the unit is off. This annoyed me and I added a small toggle switch that breaks the circuit to the antena "on" wire. This is the wire controlled by the head unit to lower and raise the antena mast. Now I can lower the mast by toggling the switch when I don't feel like having the antena up (during CD or tape playback or if ice covers the car and you start it and the antena tries to come out through a sheet of ice).
