Check engine light 850 94

I just bought a '94 850 Turbo wagon w/78k mi. The car has been serviced every 5k since new by P&W Volvo in Pittsburgh. I drove the car 80 miles and the check engine light came on...the manual says that "the engine diagnostic system has detected a possible fault in the emission control system". The only thing that I have done to the car was to fill the tank w/ 87 octane Texaco as it was almost empty when I picked it up. When I got home and read the manual I saw that Volvo recommends an octane rating of 91, is it possible that this would make the light come on? Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Jim Garfield
