I suppose keeping tolerances relaxed was one reason. It is also

easy to remove/install. I thought it might be for engine movement

but I believe the airbox is fixed to the fender so that would not

be a valid reason.

My T5 came with a cold weather package that included a plate (splash guard) over the fresh air intake (at the grill). It did look quite restrictive. That would be something to look for right off the bat.
