Cracked metal at the driver's door stop 850 1994

I appreciate your advice on a best way to handle this problem. I bought his used 854 '94 with 61K miles and decent condition. When I cheked it I noticed that door doesn't stay open, I thouhgt door stop is broken, so I knew those were inexpensive, but when mechanic looked into that he found that door is cracked right where door stop is attached and stopper is loose.

I took it to the bodyshop and they estimated $300 dollars to fix buy welding a new piece of metal in there. We always wanted a Volvo and we had to stretch a budget to get, so $300 seems steep for me.

I was wondering if somebody had a similar problem and how they went about it. Will I be able to rivet a piece of metal there instead of welding it?

Thanks in advance.
