A/C compressor clutch V70-XC70 2001

I need some advice.

Wife's 2001 V70 2.4T has a failing A/C compressor clutch. Mechanic advises one cannot just purchase a clutch (apparently he has tried). Must purchase a complete compressor and clutch assembly plus a few other components necessary for the job.

Here's the rub. After taxes this will cost around $1500.

The complaint is the A/C cuts out while driving and hot air blows from the vents. When driving the vehicle, you can feel a surge/resistance constantly as the A/C compressor clutch engages and disengages.

Klaus and others, what do you suggest?

It would be nice if Volvo sold just the clutch assembly.
