Something that I now have imprinted on my brain, by reading all of Klaus' posts, is "How does so and so know the Cat is bad? Did they take it off and shake it, dump something out of it, etc?" There is no sensor that says your CAT is bad. If the honeycomb stuff is coming out of the tail pipe, don't read any farther. You will just feel bad.

1. CHECK TO SEE THAT ALL VACUUM LINES AND CLAMPS ARE TIGHT OR NOT CRACKED.
2. CLEAN/CHANGE PLUGS WITH VOLVO PLUGS
3. USE, AT A MINIMUM, 91 OCTANE

Hose clamp at MAF connection on my 2000 XC was loose. Screwdriver -$0
Remove positive battery cable. Adjustable wrench - $0
Pull 5 plugs, clean - Small brass bristle brush - $0
1 tank of 93 Octane gas - $40 to $50

No CEL or Service Light...passed emmissions test!!!

Treat your Volvo well and she will do the same for you.
