Knock sencor what they do ? if not fix? 850 1994 turbo

what is the knock sensor do ? when the engine check light come on..

my car last owner have take the car in get the knock sensor clean 2 times

Is the knock sensor easy to get to??? if I want to clean it or replace it ?

the car runing fine and idel smooth, what happen if I avoid the problem??
