Rough startup, like choking 850

I have a 96 volvo 850 GLT (177K) that has started just fine until the last couple weeks. Occasionally it will start to choke, just for a second when starting. As the problem prolongs the choking gets a little more prominent on each startup, to the point that lately when I cut the engine I'm afraid I won't be able to start it again. When the problem first started I linked it to the heat; when I parked it in the sun and tried to start it, it would have more trouble. I suspect its the coolant temp sensor slowly dying. I'm taking to a mechanic tomorrow that doesn't work on volvos much, but since I'm in a small mountain town there aren't many mechanics that have ANY CLUE about old volvos. PLEASE HELP!
