I have driven S80's a lot and the reflection has never been distracting unless I choose to look at it. Once I'm driving it never crosses my mind.

Modern cars don't return to low idle speed instantly. I really don't know what your friend was referring to. The engine will almost instantly drop to idle speed if you were to take gear lever out of gear while coasting but no normal person does that with an automatic transmssion car.
