2004 V40 Trip Computer S40-V40

Having now had "our" 2004 V40 a week most things seem to be working as they should, with the exception of the Trip Computer. This is giving readings that have little to do with the expected readings, for example, after filing the gas tank, it initially told us that we had 340 miles left before the tank would empty. Now, with approx. 150 miles on the trip odometer, the range left is 25 miles! The temperature reading is non existant, and the other reading are equally spurious!

Does this mean we will have to have the trip computer replaced, or is it something more basic, such as a sensor, fuse, or "whatever"?
