V70 AWD help! Klaus? V70-XC70

OK - I just sold my 98 v70 and am looking to serve as rescue home for another wayward Volvo. I am going to look at 1998 V70 AWD tomorrow with 160k. The woman who owns it says it is making a "whining" noise in the center of the car - and her mechanic diagnosed it as a bad drive shaft and offered to replace it for $1k. She opted to buy a new one.

I still own a loyal 850, and what has thus far been a bulletproof v40. However, I have no experience with the AWD series. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! If you have owned one with a failed shaft, does this sound right? I'm hoping it might be something simpler (errrrr cheaper) like a u joint or carrier bearing.
